John had been a boy convict (1831) and had lost his left leg in the Hulks. He was trained as a tailor and sent to Port Macquarie; 12 children (8 at West Kempsey, 4 at Bellinger River). The family was distinguished for opening bridges in the Bellngen District where Johanna acted as local midwife. John died 1894 and Johanna 19 Mar 1929. photograph in Barefoot?, Vol 2 p.58.
