Mary Phillips, one of the Irish orphan girls, apprenticed to Mr. Beit, of Ermington, was brought before their worships Messrs McDougall & Wilton, charged as above stated; the circumstances are as follows: the girl had gone into the room of the butler, named Andrew Jones, to perform some domestic duty, of which she had been forbidden; the man being displeased, found fault, a quarrel ensued, and the girl seized a carving knife and thrust it into the man’s groin. He was taken to the hospital, and the girl was remanded.
