There were several witnesses examined, including the girl, who is not more than twelve years of age. The evidence went to prove that Mr Williams had struck the girl repeatedly with a broom handle, and when she cried out with pain he filled her mouth with ashes to prevent the neighbours being alarmed. Mr Williams was fined 10s and 30s costs.'
