Commemoration 2020
In a year when so much has not been possible, it was very rewarding to achieve what we thought might well have been impossible. Being 2020, the 25th anniversary of the formation of the GIFCC, it was extremely gratifying to be able to hold the 2020 Annual Commemoration and Presentation of Famine Memorial Prizes on Sunday August 30th.
Although our usual gathering was not possible, the Live-stream of proceedings compensated to some degree; both the Live-stream and subsequently the YouTube video have been viewed by several hundred people throughout Australia and around the world. See some comments received here.
For the 20 who took part in ceremony, from Adam Lindsay, Executive Director of Sydney Living Museums to young Mohammed Yama, six-year-old son of Zainab Khavary, proud recipient of the GIFCC Famine Memorial Refugee Prize at Western Sydney University, there was a very positive atmosphere. I thank all participants for their contributions; guest speakers, prize recipients, musicians, anthem singers, video-cameraman, A-V technician and Committee members combined to make the day such a success.
I especially thank SLM’s Susan Sedgwick for being so supportive in assisting me with the organisation of the event both prior to and on the day.
Also thanks to our video specialist, Ves Campion, for his generosity in enabling the Live-stream and YouTube video; the latter remains accessible here.
We were extremely grateful to Cara Kavanagh who stepped in at short notice to sing the Irish National Anthem so beautifully. Harpist Cliona Molins and vocalist Jacquie McPhee gave most enjoyable performances of Brendan Graham’s “Orphan Girl” and Cliona’s “Courageous Girl”, both of which are always very moving to listen to.
Last but definitely not least, very sincere thanks to Consul-General Owen Feeney, for his contribution and for representing Ambassador O’Colleai who was unable to travel from Canberra. We appreciate Owen’s interest in and ongoing support of the GIFCC.
