Compiled initially from article by Trevor McClaughlin, 'Barefoot and Pregnant?Female Orphans who emigrated from Irish Workhouses to Australia, 1848-1850', in Familia: Ulster Genealogical Review, incorporating Ulster Genealogical & Historical Guild 'Newsletter' Vol.2, No.3, 1987, pp.31-36 and updated from his Barefoot & Pregnant? Irish Famine orphans in Australia vol. 2, Genealogical Society of Victoria, Melbourne, (2001).
Shiplist: ROMAN EMPEROR incomplete, from various sources. An Appendix to a British Parliamentary Paper, House of Lords, 1849, 1082vo lists the Poor Law Unions in Ulster whence the young women came, Strabane, Magherafelt, Londonderry,Carrickmacross etc. (see Barefoot) vol. 2 p. 397. Among them were 9 young women from Newtownlimavady workhouse, County Derry or Londonderry. In March 2008 we received news of their names from local historian Morrison Stewart who found them in a box of documents relating to the former workhouse. The names of further 'possible' migrants were added as a result of Trevor McClaughlin's research in June 2008. The South Australian Register newspaper 25 Oct. 1848 claimed there were 238 females & 8 male orphans on board. The scheme originally included both males and females but the London Emigration Commissioners had decided to limit the scheme to females by May 1848 (see Barefoot vol. 2 p.9). It is possible that a small contingent of male orphans boarded the Roman Emperor.

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (hereafter PRONI) holds a fine collection of workhouse Indoor Registers. Records for the workhouse at Magherafelt in 1848 have survived. Using a method similar to the one he used in his Familia article in 1987, Trevor McClaughlin has supplied the names of a number of 'possible' Roman Emperor Orphans who came from workhouses in Castlederg (Co. Tyrone) Larne (Co. Antrim) and Magherafelt (Co. Derry or Londonderry). Eliza is recorded as being 'in fever' and 'sickly' when she entered Magherafelt workhouse on the 28th January 1848. She left 10 July 1848, perhaps to join the Roman Emperor. Officially 21 of the young women came from Magherafelt workhouse, and 8 from Larne. |

Shiplist: INCONSTANT incomplete, from various sources. An Appendix to a British Parliamentary Paper, House of Lords, 1849, 1082vo lists the Poor Law Unions whence the young women came, Newcastle, Mullingar, Tullamore, Mountmellick, Parsonstown etc (see Barefoot) vol. 2 p. 398, and states there were 186 orphans on board. The South Australian Register newspaper 9 June 1849 names 117 of these. Unfortunately not much is known about many of these young women. You will notice there is plenty of room for misspelling names. Try typing 'Staniforth Inconstant' into your search engine.

Shiplist: ELGIN incomplete, from various sources. An Appendix to a British Parliamentary Paper, House of Lords, 1849, 1082vo lists the Poor Law Unions whence the young women came, Skibbereen, Killarney, Fermoy, Lismore and Clonmel (see Barefoot) vol. 2 pp. 400-02, and states there were 190 orphans on board. The South Australian Register newspaper 12 September 1849 names some of these. Thanks to the good work of Diane Cummings that appears on the State Library of South Australia website
http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/1849Elgin.htm our list of orphans now must be almost complete. Diane has used the original passenger list of the Elgin (Certificate of Final Departure 49/17) which is available at the State Library of South Australia. There seems to be some duplication of names.

Born c. 1828, from Mitchelstown, Co. Cork and probably Fermoy workhouse. She was cook at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Watervale. She married 17 Oct. 1855 at St Marks Anglican Church, Penwortham, Wm. Haythorpe (b. Norfolk 8 May 1808) ex Van Diemen's Land convict. Witnesses were Sarah Spratt & Arthur Horrocks, brother of the explorer Charles Ainsworth Horrocks. Arthur lent his signet ring for the occasion as the coach bringing the ring from Adelaide failed to arrive on time. William & Mary lived in a two roomed limestone dwelling on a farm at Leasingham and raised a family of ten children. William died in 1889 and is buried at St. Marks Church, Penwortham. The family later moved to Mannum. Mary Ann died at the age of 85 years on 7th July, 1913. She is buried in the Mannum cemetery. Di Sinclair-Warren email tjilbru[at]bigpond.net au |

Born c. 1833. From Kanturk workhouse. Married 23 yr old Peter Burns, carpenter, (Newry Co Down) in St Mary's Church, Morphett Vale, 27 Dec 1853, 10 children, 7 boys, 3 girls, first two in Adelaide, next 8 in the Western Districts of Victoria. The couple eventually settled in their homestead "The Warrions" overlooking Lake Corangmite. Peter died April 1893, Johanna at Euroa 16 March 1897. Her sister Ellen was another Famine orphan who came by the Maria. We do not know if the sisters knew of each other's presence in Australia. A plaque was recently placed on Johanna's unmarked grave in Euroa. Her descendant Richard Olive has done some amazing detective work tracing Johanna's story. r.olive[at]bigpond.net.au |
